A new Farm Beauty Contest began on the Eve of the Epiphany, 5 January.
Basic Rules of Farm Beauty Contests
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
To find the Contest Menu, tap on the Golden Chalice (Cup) in the centre of the top of your screen. The Menu can be accessed as well from the Main Menu at the bottom right of your game.
You need to register your own Farm in the contest if you wish to have the ability to vote in the Contest. Voting gives rewards of its own. Register by taking a 'snapshot' of your farm as directed and if you wish to change the default message to a personal one, tap on the pencil in the message box and change it. Then Submit your photograph of your Farm. You then will be given votes by the four characters who are involved in the Contests. Collect these ALWAYS each day before reset as well as any votes given by your neighbours.
Votes from the four characters are based on different categories or aspects of your farm. I have discussed these below and how to maximise the count of each Character's votes. Votes by neighbours are different from these 'stable' votes from the four characters that ALWAYS are based on the current snapshot of your Farm rather than the actual condition of your farm. In other words, organise your farm for the Contest first, take the snapshot and THEN remove items you do not actually need or want on your farm, such as the large number of Machines that give you maximum votes from Dad for Machines.
You can take a new snapshot every day but there is no reason to do so if you have maximised your Farm for all possible Votes.
The key to this is balance. You need to have a variety of Crops on the Farm. Try to have 16 different Crops growing... the total number needed may be lower from 12 to 13 but it is easy to grow different Crops and you have nothing to lose.
You need to have at least 12 different Machines on your Farm to obtain the maximum Votes for Machines from Dad. Some players claim that the Salad Machine has counted as two Machines in the past but again, to be safe, move as many Machines onto your Farm as possible before you take your initial Snapshot.
Do the same with respect to your Trees. You need a variety of Trees. Duplicates never count. In this respect, an Upgrader does not change the nature of the Animal or Machine to count as a different variety. Most players should not have any trouble in placing 16 different types of Trees on the farm. I believe that the total needed is less, possibly 12 or 13 but again, it does no harm to be safe.
Finally, there are the Animals. Butterfly Houses and Beehives of each type count as Animals and every type counts as a different Animal.
Landscape Points count for Votes with three of the Characters. You do not even need 2300 Landscape Points to maximise these votes. I believe the actual total now is closer to 2100 points but need to confirm for the current contest. Recently, the game changed to add Landscape Points to Charm Points for a new total. I will try to pinpoint the number required for maximum votes.
Expansions are another good source of votes. You only need to have performed a few expansions to gain maximum votes from Felicia and Dad for expansions.
Another category is your Gallery. Now that you can register Crops and other items, even low level players should be able to maximise votes for a good Gallery. Votes are based on the totals of the items you have registered. Your Gallery 'upgrades' at specific totals.
Finally there are votes for a 'high level' farm. I have not achieved the maximum on Harvest Moon FDC yet because I believe you still have to be at Level 150 now for this.
'Theme' gives votes from three of the four Characters. Your best bet to maximise your Theme Votes if you have not played long or did not collect Reward Decorations for any other reason would be to purchase the Ice Cream Princess from the special sale offer in the top right of the screen as well as the Ice Cream Prince. They are expensive but if you are not at maximum for Theme, the first can give you 9 extra Votes for theme each day from the Characters and the Ice Cream Prince can give 6 extra votes for theme from the Characters..
With a contest that lasts 20 days, I believe you once again need to have a total of 200 votes per day to obtain the Reward Decoration at 4000 Votes.
The unfinished Ice Base can be found in the Decorations section of the Market now for 3000 Coins. You can own a maximum of three Ice Bases.
Find the materials as follows:
Ice Rock: 50 Green Mystrons
Snow Rock: 20 Purple Mystrons
Snow Shovel: 5 Yellow Mystrons
Snow Heap: 5 Blue Mystrons
EVEN AN UNFINISHED ICE BASE SHOULD GIVE 1 VOTE EACH FOR THEME FROM THREE OF THE CHARACTERS IF YOU HAVE NOT REACHED MAXIMUM FOR THEME.
Obtaining Theme Items: There are more options now to purchase items in Seaside. Trees can be found in the Special Deal (Daily) section of the Market and Decorations often can be purchased directly from the Gallery as well as being found in Special Offer bundles and in the new Boutique Decoration section of the Market. The Decorations loaded into the Lucky Wheel each month usually include a number of Theme Decorations for the current Farm Beauty Contest as well.

New Upgraders
xxxxxxxxxxxxx
There are two new upgraders in the Market. Whenever you see a red dot next to the name of any department in the Market Menu, it signifies new items. We now have a Wine Maker Upgrader and a Burger Machine Upgrader. Each costs 4000 Coins.
The following basic instructions are for new players:
Using Upgraders: Purchase the Upgrader in the Market, then tap on the Move Tool (X) first and then the Search (magnifying glass) icon to add items to it, including the actual Animal or Machine as well as any Gadgets that can be used. To be able to use any Gadget, the Upgrader must be at the same level (or higher) than the Gadget Level. Otherwise, you will not be able to place the Gadget on the Upgrader. To upgrade any Upgrader, tap first on the Move Tool and then on the last icon in the toolbar which is that of a house with two green arrows shooting forth from its base. You then will be able to see the Upgrade requirements for the next level.
Note that you now can use Batch Production when Animals or Machines are on Upgraders but you will not receive the bonus products when you do this. You can use Gold Finger as well in many cases, but not to produce Red Eggs with the Chicken Coop Upgrader. I personally like to use Gold Finger on the Burger Machine and the Baker as these are multiple ingredient Machines and with Gold Finger, you do not need to have any of the ingredients to produce items using Gold Finger.
WARNING: Every level of upgrade for any upgrader occupies more space on your farm so if you do not make certain that you have some free space next to the Upgrader, you will be forced into the Edit Mode. Many players including myself do not like this situation. It is best therefore to upgrade your Upgraders only when you have cleared some space on all sides of the Upgrader.
