Strategies for Completing Missions
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
An important component in the traditional Fortune Telling Night sequence that may not be as familiar to new players as veterans are the requirements to make Items in the Beauty Shop. I have seen posts on Facebook asking whether or not the Beauty Shop is worth the price. Well, like other buildings that cannot be sold or stored, it will be used again and again. If you do not complete it, you will be unable to participate in many of the Quests unless you spend RC to 'skip' the task. It therefore makes sense to spend the RC on the Beauty Shop instead.
Beauty Shop Items like those processed in the Seafood House, take time to complete. Each Item has a different time frame, but the Item is counted towards the Quest task when you BEGIN to craft it and not when it is completed. Note that many of the Ingredients are in fact Items processed in the Seafood House. In this Fortune Telling Quest, you first have to make some Conch Earrings. Later you will be required to make 10 Rose Facial Masques and 10 Pearl Hydrating Masques. Note that ALL Masques have the Clay Facial Masque as the primary ingredient. You therefore may wish to prepare these in advance. You will need a total of 20 Clay Facial Masques to complete the two tasks.
A difficulty where Processed Items made in the Seafood House is concerned is the fact that many of these are only possible bonus Items. The Janthina Sea Snail that produces the Conch required to make Conch Earrings ALWAYS yields two Conch shells but the Nautica Sea Snail that produces the Snail Shells only does so as a possible bonus. Furthermore, it takes 50 Minutes to process a single Nautica Sea Snail. The Conch Earrings are one of the earliest tasks in the Quest sequence. If you have been diligent, you will have plenty of Snail Shells in your Barn. If not, you either will be required to wait while the Items are processed, buy each Snail Shell for 1 RC or skip the task by using RC. .
Likewise, the Pearl that is needed for the Pearl Hydrating Masque is only a possible Bonus when Scallops are processed. As the two Masques are needed to complete later Tasks in the Quest, you may wish to make certain that you produce as many as possible in advance. Unfortunately, there is a task that requires you actually to process 10 Gulfweeds, which means that your Seafood House will be in use at THAT point. Nonetheless, good planning should help you where the Pearls are concerned.
As far as Crops and Animal Products are concerned, you will need a fair amount of Beef to complete the traditional Quest sequence. You need Beef for Beef Salami as well as for use in one of the new Recipes. I have found that 20 Beef often are sold in the Mystery Shop. As my Farm, although expanded to the largest size, is very crowded, I find it useful to purchase the Beef when offered using Green Mystrons rather than allowing the enormous Cow to occupy most of my free space! Other Farmers may not have this problem but whether you produce it yourself or purchase it, the Beef will be needed.
Many of the Tasks require Items that use Machine Products as Ingredients. One of these is the requirement to produce 15 Kvass. Kvass uses Black Bread and Honey. Black Bread is produced in your Baker. It is not a bad idea always to have plenty of Wheat Bread and Black Bread on hand in your Barn for potential use in future Quests. Oat Bread is useful as well but not to the same extent. Incidentally, I never take any Power out of my Gift Box until it is needed. As your Power will refill over the course of time, it is best to use additional Power only when YOUR Power gauge has reached zero.
The most Power intensive series of tasks is Fortune Telling Night VI when you will need two Pickled Cabbage and two Onions for each of the 20
Braised Cabbage. You therefore will need a total of 60 Power to
complete this single task. With the 6 Juniper Sausage, you need a total
of 66 Power. If possible, make the Pickled Cabbage in advance!
Other products that you can obtain in advance are the Milk and Maple Syrup needed to make Maple Milk Tea and the Apples and Maple Syrup needed for the Candied Apples. If you have been playing the game for awhile, you should have plenty of all these in your Barn as long as you harvest your Trees regularly. Milk can be requested from Neighbours as a Free Gift. When there is no ongoing Quest, I try to request Milk, Wheat Flour and Cheddar Cheese from my Neighbours for stockpiling as these Items are used constantly.
In this Quest, you will need great quantities of Rice, both in order to obtain the Blue Candles that Peacock Feathers yield randomly and for use as an Ingredient in Cooked Dishes. The appearance of any Collection Item always is random. You will need a total of 50 Blue Candles. This could require the production of 100 Peacock Feathers or 300 Peacock Feathers depending upon your personal luck. Rice must be fed to a Peacock to produce a Peacock Feather.
When to spend RC (Premium Cash)
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Many Farmers do not wish to spend ANY RC in any so-called 'free' game but if it is a game that you like, you may wish to invest in it, as without funding, these games cannot improve and sometimes even die. Unfortunately, unlike the original Family Farm that gives RC as a daily log-in Reward on a regular basis, Seaside does this only rarely. You can earn RC, however, by completing Accomplishments and by registering specific Items or Collections.
How, then, should you spend your precious premium cash? I would suggest that you use it to produce the greatest benefits for your Farm. In terms of RC that is required to complete any Building or Machine or to buy a specific Tree or Animal, these are investments that really cannot be avoided if you wish to be able to complete all Quests or Missions and obtain all possible Rewards. Do not hesitate, therefore, to use your RC if it is absolutely necessary to purchase a Material to complete a Building or Machine. Every Building and Machine is required again and again. You only delay the inevitable if you 'skip' a task that requires the use of a specific Machine because you are reluctant to spend RC to complete it. In any case, you only can skip Tasks in Quests by paying RC, so you really are wasting your money if you do this.
There are times, however, when the use of RC during a Quest sequence is beneficial. In some cases, an Ingredient needed to make the Item required in a task cannot be obtained quickly or easily. This is true particularly where 'bonus' items processed from Seafood Items are concerned. You may process 30 of the Seafood Item without receiving the Bonus Item you need. In such a case, you may consider, not 'skipping' the Task but purchasing the actual Ingredient instead. After all, each action in Seaside usually has an XP Reward and increasing your Level of Experience may unlock new Items and Quests.
Where Farm Aids are concerned, it is better to obtain these by using Gift Boxes than by purchasing them but sometimes you simply need more. If you are embarking upon a time-restricted Quest or Mission, you may wish to invest in the Farm Aid you need most, whether it is OP or Fertilisers. Seaside does give Farm Aid Rewards, however. You can obtain them in Gift Boxes, by registering Items in your Gallery or by completing Accomplishments. Your level of patience will determine whether or not you wish to speed a task by using a Farm Aid.
On the whole, I prefer to purchase 200 Super Fertilisers for 21 RC rather than purchasing Rainbow Rain for 30 RC. The Super Fertiliser can be used for specific Crops I need. The Rainbow Rain simply blankets your entire Farm. If the Rainbow Rain were less expensive, I would use it, but in the circumstances, I would rather target the specific Crops needed to complete a Task.
Power always is a problem in these time-restricted Quests but the price of purchase for extra Power is truly prohibitive. For 20 RC, for example, you obtain only 30 Power. It is far better to visit Neighbours and place as many cleanable Decorations as possible on your own Farm in order to garner as much Power as possible. Remember, however, that any Reward found in a Gift Box is random. What is true is that the Blue Gift Boxes contain the best Rewards and the greatest number. This brings me to another opportunity to use your precious RC.
From time to time, sales will appear in the top right corner of your screen. They are time-limited and usually include a special Decoration as well as Fertiliser or RC. If you are willing to spend real money on this game, the sales are one of the very best investments. Not only do you receive RC that usually would have to be purchased by itself but you often can obtain a Decoration that yields the valuable Blue Gift Box when cleaned. The most recent example of this was a sale that offered the Boy Cupid, the Girl Cupid and the Japanese Garden in different offers. All of these yield Blue Gift Boxes, I believe. Other Decorations that yield the Blue Gift Boxes include the Market Stall and the special Decorations rewarded for completing Cooking Stand Contests. Among the latter are the Toucan and the Small Squirrel.
Purchasing a bundle of items in a special Sale therefore carries multiple Rewards for the Farmer, especially when it includes a Decoration that yields a Blue Gift Box. These Items when registered often give a Reward in the form of 1 RC. When part of a Collection, registration of the Collection often gives an RC Reward. Finally, each time a Neighbour cleans the Decoration for you, you receive a Blue Gift Box that may contain OP or Power.
Finally, where any Collections Mission is concerned, there are two different strategies that make it easier. One is to have multiple Machines or Animals working together to produce the product that randomly produces the Collections Items. The second is Batch Production. Batch Production really is the least frustrating method of completing any Collection Mission where any Animal or Machine is concerned. By using Batch Production for the Animal and Machine, you can focus on the Crop and Tree that yields the other two Colours of the designated Item. If you are patient, you can wait for the Crop and Tree to produce the Items naturally, but if not, you can use a Farm Aid to speed matters along.

The History of St. Andrew's Night
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The celebration of St. Andrew's Day and Night basically is rooted in Northern European traditions. St. Andrew was St. Peter's younger brother and his martyrdom took place on a cross that was fashioned in the shape of an X. In the old Northern European Rune alphabet, this form is a Rune named Gebo, signifying both 'Gift' and 'Sacrifice'. As the Festival occurs at the very end of November, traditionally a time when blood sacrifices were made in ancient Northern Europe, it is possible that St. Andrew originally represented an older form of human sacrifice for the fertility of the land.
Whatever its origins, St. Andrew's Night is a time when girls traditionally played ritual games in order to discover whom they would marry. (We did this ourselves as children.) One would peel an apple very carefully, making certain that the entire peel remained unbroken, then throw it over ones shoulder. When it landed, the shape it made would represent the first letter of the name of ones future husband.
Another old rite is that of melting wax and dropping it into water to see what form is made. This can be done using molten metal as well, provided one has the means. Another ritual is that of writing the names of potential spouses and placing them beneath the pillow. In the morning, one chooses a slip of paper and the name written on it will be the future spouse. A girl often will bury either 21 grains of wheat or a fresh sprig of basil beneath their pillows. If none is taken in the night, she will marry within the year.
St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. The festival is celebrated both in Austria and Germany. The very flag of Scotland has the saltire or cross of St. Andrew emblazoned upon it.
St. Andrew is considered the first of Christ's disciples by many. He was one of the fishermen who, hearing the call of the Saviour, cast down his nets instantly to follow, becoming instead a 'fisher of men' according to tradition.
The Festival of St. Andrew falls on 30 November during the time of an old Roman festival devoted to Saturn in his manifestation as 'Father Time'. The depictions of St. Andrew usually show him as an old man who originally would have represented the Sun at the very end of the year, when he is old and weary. in Romania in particular, some of the ancient traditions connected to St. Andrew's Festival are inherited from the Romans. On St. Andrew's Night, wolves are allowed to eat whatever and whomever they wish. They can speak to humans as well on this night but if a person should hear one speak, he or she will die within the year.
Another Romanian tradition is that of the mother of the house taking branches from Apple, Cherry, Pear Trees and Rosebushes to make bracelets for all the members of the family. The one that blooms by New Year will enjoy special health and good fortune.
There is another rite connected to the belief that ghosts haunt the land on this night. The rite is a special social gathering known as 'guarding the garlic'. The doors and windows of the house are rubbed with fresh garlic. All the dishes in the house then are turned upside down. Three bulbs of garlic for each girl at the gathering are placed in a wooden tub in a room lit only by candlelight. An old woman is set to the job of guarding the garlic throughout the night. In the morning, the tub is taken outside and every one dances round it. Each guest then takes some garlic home for protection.
Another rite of protection involves the cattle and livestock. Salt is blessed and buried beneath the door of the stable. On St. George's Day, it will be unearthed and given to the livestock. This is a rite of protection against wolves. St. Andrew is known as the patron saint of wolves.
There are many more traditions that involve divination and protection.
