Farm Movie Fest Quests/Missions

A new Quest sequence entitled Farm Movie Fest has been released on Seaside.  It is not time-restricted, but I expect it is level-restricted, as the very first Quest requires that the player have 2 Cinnamon Trees on the Farm.  Cinnamon Trees are unlocked at a fairly high level in the game and are quite costly.

For those players who complain a little that far too much space is consumed by Trees, this Quest may prove a little annoying, as it requires a rather large number of Trees of various types to be placed!

This site is organised to include Pages as well as Posts.  Ordinarily, all Quests that are not time-restricted can be found on the Quests, Missions and Expansions Page.  If you look above any Post, you will see Tabs that are links for these permanent Pages.  The Farm Movie Fest Quest will be included on that page as well.

Time-Restricted Easter Quest

Above, two screenshots of my Farm.  The top one shows the Chicken Home upgraded to Level 5, an Easter Table from the Collections Mission and the final Reward from the Easter Quest in the form of the Ice Cream Machine.  The second one shows the Easter Chocolate Tree, a special Decoration that is being offered currently in a sale.  There are three special Items:  The Easter Chocolate Tree, the Angel Rain Egg and the Easter Bunny.

Above, you can see the Easter Bunny decoration on the left side of the screen as well as the Angel Rain Egg on the right side.  The Easter Bunny can be cleaned but has no other special properties.  The Angel Rain Egg, however, when cleaned by a Neighbour, will yield Rain until the 24th of April.  The lovely Easter Chocolate Tree randomly will yield either a Decoration Egg or a Chocolate Egg until the 26th of April when it will begin to yield one of the three types of Chocolate available in the game instead.

Note the gift-wrapped box icon on the top right of the screen.  This is the sale offer.  Open the link and swipe to find three different offers.

Easter Mission/Quest
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

On Good Friday, a new time-restricted Quest was released entitled quite simply, 'Easter'.

As usual, this time-restricted Quest gives the Farmer 9 Days for the Collections Mission.  The traditional Quest sequence can be found in the top left of the screen and has a total of 9 steps.  You need to complete the Collections Mission for the final prize of the Walnut Tree and place it in order to complete Easter VII  unless you prefer to purchase the Walnut Tree in the Market for 8 RC.  In Easter VIII, you will be required to place three Easter Tables on your Farm.  To do so, you will need a total of 225 Little Chicks.  You will need 200 Little Chicks to redeem the Walnut Tree.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Collections Mission
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

With Chicken Home, collect Little Chicks from all kinds of crops, trees, animals and Machines!

Purchase the Chicken Home for 500 Coins and place it, then tap on it to open it.  You will find four Prizes.

The four Prizes are:

Chicken Nest (1 Little Chick each)
You will need these to upgrade your Chicken Home.  The price never changes.

Easter Table
There are a total of 5 Easter Tables that can be redeemed.
100 Little Chicks for the first Easter Table.
You will need three of these placed on your Farm to complete the traditional Easter Quests.
To redeem the second Easter Table, you will need 75 Little Chicks.
To redeem the third Easter Table, you will need 50 Little Chicks.
To redeem the fourth Easter Table, you need 25 Little Chicks and for the fifth, only 15.
As previously stated, therefore, you will need a total of 225 Little Chicks to redeem the three Easter Tables needed to complete Easter VIII.  The other two are optional.

Sack of Bait
There are a total of 100 that can be redeemed.
1 Little Chick for the first one.  You need to redeem at least one to unlock the Walnut Tree
The second Sack of Bait will cost 2 Little Chicks.  The third costs 4 Little Chicks.   The fourth costs 8 Little Chicks.   The price reaches a plateau of 30 Little Chicks when there are 195 Sacks of Bait remaining in the stocks.

Organic Fertiliser
  Sack of 25 Fertiliser.
There are a total of 25 that can be redeemed.
The first one costs only 1 Little Chick.  You need to redeem at least one to unlock the Walnut Tree.
The second Sack costs 2 Little Chicks.  The third costs 4 Little Chicks.  The fourth costs 8 Little Chicks.  The price will continue to increase.  For example, the fifth costs 32 Little Chicks and the sixth costs 50 Little Chicks.  The next costs 100 Little Chicks and after that, 200 Little Chicks.  The next after that costs 250 Little Chicks, making one begin to wonder how much a sack of Organic Fertiliser really should be worth!
At this point, however, one probably has nothing else to do with the Little Chicks apart from redeeming sacks of Fertiliser and Bait...

The Chcken Nest costs 1 Little Chick and is used to upgrade the Chicken Home to 'improve your luck'.  At the final Level 5 Upgrade, you will receive 2 Little Chicks randomly in collection.

You need to redeem at least 1 of each of the four Prizes in order to unlock the Walnut Tree.

When you have redeemed at least one each of the four Prizes, you will unlock the Walnut Tree.  200 Little Chicks are required to redeem a Walnut Tree.

Final Prize:  Walnut Tree

It is only when you wish to upgrade to the final Level that you will need RC.  To upgrade from Level 4 to Level 5, you will need:

10 Roof Tiles (Request from Neighbour)
5 Chicken Nests (Redeem for 1 Little Chick each)
1 Mother Hen: 5 RC

In tandem with the Collections Mission is a traditional sequence of Quests:

Mission Strategies

Knowing the items that will be required for a mission allows one to prepare in advance to some extent.  As is usually the case with respect to recent time-restricted Missions, many Kitchen Dishes are required.  Make as many ingredients as possible in advance in order to prevent unnecessary delays while waiting for Power to replenish itself.

Soft Dough and Egg Nog are two Items that can be prepared in anticipation of the Quest.  Another is Condensed Milk.   Finally, you will need Apple Jelly for the Fruit Butter.

In terms of Machine products, you will need Alpaca Hair for the Blue Teddy Bears and Mayonnaise for the Egg Salad.  Make certain you have a few Grapes for the Raisin Chocolate.

The number of Collection items required to redeem the final Prize has increased from past requirements of 150 to 200.  You will need another 225 Little Chicks simply in order to redeem three Easter Tables.  If you are willing to spend RC on this mission, it would be better to spend it on a Walnut Tree than anything else.  With a Walnut Tree in place, you can focus on the Little Chicks required for the three Easter Tables.

Easter Decorations in Seaside and the original Family Farm
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Those of us who play both the original Family Farm and Seaside recognise the various decorations and Machines when they appear in Seaside, but there are players who may not be familiar with the older game.  For those players, it may be interesting to note where the decorations originated.

The Ice Cream Machine that is the final Reward for the Easter Quest has been available in the original Family Farm for a long time but the little Eggs that represent different countries are a Craft item in the original game.  You craft them but they then are converted into Bunny Tokens to use for other prizes that include a Camellia Tree and ultimately, a Peek-A-Boo Bunny.  This little Eggs are Decorations in Seaside that can be purchased and then placed on your Farm.

Songkran or Songhran Summer Splash Time-Restricted Quests

Songhran or Songkran, the Thai New Year

When I completed the last time-restricted Quest sequence, I had hoped to have seen the end of massive rice production for quite some time.  Nonetheless, as Rice features heavily in the Kitchen recipes as well as providing feed for more than one type of Animal, I began to restock on Rice by growing more during the 'downtime'.

Well, a new dual sequence of time-restricted Quests in the form of the Songkran Quests also spelled Songhran in some of the quests) has begun and over 400 Rice in my Barn went the way of all things in the first hour of the Quest!  You will need massive amounts of Rice once again to complete this Quest sequence.  You need it for the Turkey who provides Turkey Meat for the Turkey Sausages that are an ingredient in the Turkey Burgers that randomly produce Orange Shirts.  You need to grow it as a requirement in one of the sequences of the traditional Mission as well as for use in many of the Recipes that are required during the course of the Songhran Quest.  So prepare to see your Farm once again converted to paddy fields if you wish to complete this Quest.

I really am not a fan of the Tuk-Tuk that is one of the Rewards for completion of the Collection Mission, although the Tuk-Tuk recently has made its way into many popular games, including the most recent Animal Crossing for 3DS.  It is one of the International items there.  I suppose my own reason for not being overly excited about it is that I prefer the old-fashioned, non-mechanical devices, a rickshaw, for example or a simple cart drawn by oxen or horses (or even Cats, if you happen to be a Nordic Goddess named Freya).  The other Collection reward is exquisite, though, as it is a Jasmine Bush that produces beautiful Jasmine flowers.  If you do not have the heart or will for this Mission/Quest, you can find the Jasmine Bush in the Market for 7 RC.

As previously indicated, the Songkran or Songhran Quest has two separate elements.  The first is a Collections Mission wherein you will collect four different colours of Tropical Shirts randomly from specific Crops,

Collect Tropical Shirts
Make farm produce to try and discover all the Tropical Shirts
70 Green Tropical Shirts from Cabbage
50  Blue Tropical Shirts from Blueberry Jam
30 Orange Tropical Shirts from Turkey Burger
10  Red Tropical Shirt from Wild Rose Fruit

The Rewards are a Tuk-Tuk and a Jasmine Bush.  You can purchase another Jasmine Bush in the Market for 7 RC if you wish.  You will need to harvest it for the Quest.

Thai New Year Festival: Songkran or Songhran
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

As with respect to many ancient Festivals, the main thrust of the Thai New Year Festival originally was a prayer for rain so that the crops would grow.  Fertility for the land, in other words, was the reason why people celebrated this Festival as water is the source of life and could be the difference between life and death for people who depended upon the land for sustenance.

Most New Year Festivals involve cleansing rituals and Songkran/Songhran is no exception.  The images of the Buddha are bathed ritually and homes are cleaned thoroughly in preparation for a new Year.  Water fights, even with the use of 'weapons' such as water guns and cannons are an offshoot of the ancient cleansing rituals and are extremely popular in modern Thailand.  People give alms to monks and visit their families.

A sign of respect towards elders is to pour perfumed water on their palms.  This is similar to the ritual of bathing the statues of the Buddha.  Water fights may be fun, but the foundation of the tradition is that of cleansing the body and soul of all negative influences.  The streets are inundated with water during this festival.

A visit to the beach to build pagodas from sand is part of the Songkran/Songhran tradition.

Beauty pageants are a contemporary way of choosing a Songkran Queen.  The origins of the Songkran Queen may be found in a tale that involves King Kabilaprom and his son, Prince Thammaban.  The King asked his son to describe the attributes of a good person during the morning, at noon and finally in the evening.  If the Prince were to answer correctly, the King would forfeit his own head.  If the Prince were to answer incorrectly, the Prince would be beheaded instead.  The Prince gave the correct responses which were the head in the morning, the chest at noon and the foot in the evening.  The King then had to submit to beheading.

(This obviously is a corruption of a very ancient worldwide sacrifice ritual of the King in order to allow his son or heir to take power.  By sacrificing his life, the King or Ruler made certain that the land would be fertile.)

In this case, the King was so powerful that, if his head had touched the ground, a drought would occur, scorching the land.  Nor could the head be tossed into the sky or into the sea.  (This tale has parallels in the legends that surround other heroes in other cultures, among them Imam Husayn.)  His seven angel daughters in turn carried his head clockwise round a sacred mountain, the Phra Sumane Mountain.

Each angel daughter has her own specific attributes and each has a specific day.  When Songkran Day, the New Year Day falls upon the day that is associated with that Queen, her attributes will determine the course of the Year:

Tungsatevee, Sunday: Red clothing, prefers wild fruit with discus in the right hand, shell in the left hand, rides a Garuda

Korakatevee, Monday: Yellow clothing, pearl ornaments, prefers butter oil, dagger in the right hand, walking stick in the left, rides a Tiger

Ragsotevee, Tuesday:  Light red clothing with agate ornaments, prefers blood, trident in the right hand, arrow in the left hand, rides a Pig

Montatevee, Wednesday:  Emerald green clothing, cat's eye ornaments, prefers milk and butter, sharp iron in the right hand, walking stick in the left, rides a Donkey

Kirineetevee, Thursday:  Yellow-green clothing with emerald ornaments, prefers nuts and sesame seeds, elephant hook in the right hand, gun in the left hand, rides an Elephant

Kimitatevee, Friday:  White clothing with topaz ornaments, prefers bananas, dagger in the right hand, Indian vina in the left hand, rides a Buffalo

Mahotorntevee, Saturday:  Black clothing with onyx ornaments, prefers hog deer meat, discus in the right hand, trident in the left hand, rides a Peacock

The Songkran Queen or an image of the Buddha is carried through the streets in many cases:

Change in Fishing

Since the last update of Family Farm, I have noticed a big difference in the fishing option.  No longer does the upgraded 'middle' Fishing Rod suffice.  You need to purchase the highest grade of Fishing Rod for 15 RC if you do not wish to miss catches when you fish.

I noticed it particularly when I was fishing for items that required 200 bait.  I missed at least a third of my catches where previously, I never would have missed even one.  I bought the highest grade of Fishing Rod to see if it made a substantial difference in my success rate and it did.

Pity though!  We all were doing very well before this upgrade with the middle grade of Fishing Rod!

Incidentally, when any Quest or Mission requires that you catch a certain number of a specific type of Seafood or Fish, there is a way to circumvent the limit of casts that you are given without spending RC.  If, when you get a 'hit', you see that it is not the item you need, allow it to swim away.  You will lose your bait but you will not have 'spent' any of your casts.  This can be useful, especially as the item you catch with any sort of Hook can be very random within the list of items that can be caught using that particular Hook.

You can find the complete list of all Items as well as other tips with respect to Fishing on the Fishing Page on this site.  I have copied the contents of the Fishing Page below as well for those who do not wish to navigate the site:

Since the last update of Family Farm at the beginning of April, I have noticed a big difference in the fishing option.  No longer does the upgraded 'middle' Fishing Rod suffice.  You need to purchase the highest grade of Fishing Rod for 15 RC if you do not wish to miss catches when you fish.  The rod is the Panda Bamboo Rod with 'high fishing accuracy'.

I suppose that it is only logical that the 'Seaside' version of Family Farm would introduce a Fishing option and expand it to include a Seafood House where items caught by the player can be processed as well as adding a large number of Seafood Recipes to the kitchen..

I have to confess that I did not enjoy the fishing option much with the original free rod.   Fishing with any rod can require a lot of 'bait' which the player can make by trading items produced on his/her farm.  It requires TIME and PATIENCE.  With the original rod,  in many cases, after playing the 'fish' or whatever is on the line for what appears to be a veritable eternity, the creature manages to escape, leaving one with an empty hook and lost bait.

What my own relationship with the fishing option might have been had it not been required for a quest I cannot say but it was made a requirement in a time-limited sequence of Quests entitled 'The Farm Beauty Contest'.   Three new recipes that required items caught while fishing were added to the Kitchen.  One had to produce three of each to complete one of the steps in the Quest.  I therefore had to make a valiant attempt to succeed at fishing.

The items that needed to be caught for that quest mainly are Octopi.  One needed a total of 6 Octopi as they are ingredients in two of the three seafood recipes.  Octopi are fast-moving, cunning creatures as I know from other games...  In Animal Crossing, New Leaf, Octopi are caught while diving but they are one of the more difficult creatures to catch as they tend to move quickly beyond the barrier, thus earning safety from the player's clutches.  In Family Farm Seaside, they apparently can be caught only if one uses a hook that requires 200 Bait per throw.  In six attempts, I caught only one Octopus.  I then decided that I would use my valuable RC to skip that particular step in the Quest.  For a total of 9 RC, I bought an end to frustration and peace of mind.  Probably one of my better FFS investments, in all honesty.

NOTE THAT THIS EXPERIENCE WAS WITH THE ORIGINAL WOODEN FISHING ROD.  AFTER I WAS ABLE TO UPGRADE MY FISHING ROD FOR 12,000 COINS, I WAS ABLE TO CATCH ITEMS WITHOUT TAPPING OVER 300 TIMES ON THE HOOK!  NOW, HOWEVER, SINCE THE GAME UPDATE AT THE START OF APRIL 2014, ONE MUST HAVE THE HIGHEST GRADE OF ROD TO CATCH ALL FISH.

I strongly urge players to invest 12,000 Coins in the Carbon Fibre Rod.  Fishing now is an important part of Family Farm Seaside and it is not fun at all if the player uses the original rod.  My own experience has been echoed by player after player.  The Carbon Fibre Rod is of 'medium' accuracy, however.  Until April 2014, that meant in effect that one never missed a catch but now, you will find that you may miss about a third of the catches with it.  It is only the 'high' accuracy fishing rod that costs 15 RC that now will allow you to make EVERY catch effortlessly.

There are many  Kitchen Recipes that use both raw Fish caught at the pier as well as Items processed from fishing catches in the Seafood House.  You will find all Kitchen Recipes on my Kitchen page, along with details as to how to obtain each ingredient.

When fishing, it is the HOOK that determines the type of fish or item you can catch.   ALL Items can be caught theoretically with any rod, but using the Carbon Fibre Rod allows the player a far greater chance of success with any 'hit' as well as drastically lowering the number of taps needed to 'reel it in'.    The Octopus that took over 300 taps to catch with the original rod took only 9 taps to catch with the Carbon Fibre Rod.  With the Panda Bamboo Rod, purchased with 15 RC, you will catch every fish.

I personally did not see the point of the Panda Bamboo Rod before April 2014, as I did very well with the 'medium accuracy' rod and completed my Fishing Book using that one.  With the update to the game at the start of April, however, the fish behaved very differently.  After a single tap, they would begin to rush away and it would be impossible in some cases to recover them.  I therefore decided to splash out on the 'high' accuracy rod and found that this was the key to success.

It is the HOOK that determines which items can be caught but the rod determines your level of success in catching ANYTHING.  Regrettably, there are quite a few items that require a hook that uses bait that must be purchased with 1 RC.  If you intend to spend RC to fish, it is better to spend it on the bait for items that cannot be caught otherwise.

The types of Hook are:

Squid Hook:  Requires 10 Bait per catch
Bone Fishhook:  Requires 50 Bait per catch
Treble Hook:  Requires 200 Bait per catch
Colourful Hook:  Requires 1 RC per catch

If you wish to complete your Fish Book, you MUST use every type of Hook, including the Hook that costs 1 RC per catch.  Tap on the round icon of the Hook at the end of your Fishing Rod to access or change it.  The colours are:

Squid Hook: Blue
Bone Fishhook: White
Treble Hook: Red
Colourful Hook: Striped

You can access your Fish Book by tapping on the little closed book in the bottom right corner of your screen once you reach your Pier.    Here is a list of the Items in your Fish Book with the Hook required for each:

For me, always caught this when I tapped the bottom right as close as possible to the pier.  It always was accompanied by 5 RC as well.

Completing your Fish Book CAN be expensive in terms of premium Cash, but do note that, when I caught the Treasure Chest, I received 5 RC with it!  That basically reimbursed me for the cost of using the special Colourful Hook.

Items caught while fishing now can be processed in the new Seafood House as well.  The Seafood House must be built from an unfinished structure purchased in the Market.  It requires 15 Blue Tiles, 15 Bricks and 1 Red Crab.  The Blue Tiles and Bricks can be requested from Neighbours but the Red Crab has to be purchased with 4 RC, as I recall.  (Correct me if I am wrong about the name of that material... it is a Crab, in any case and appears to form the sign above the door of the House when it is completed.)

A completed Seafood House allows the player to process one item at a time.  Upgrades can be made however, to unlock more processing slots.  The first upgrade requires 10 Blue Tiles and 10 Bricks.

The Items caught when fishing all require different amounts of time to process.  For example, a Wakame piece of seaweed is processed in 12 minutes but a Scallop takes only 3 minutes.  In some cases, there is only one possible item to be made from the original ingredient but in others, there are probabilities that in rare cases allow the player to obtain more valuable items.

An example of this is the Coral.  When processed, the most probable result will be 8 bags of Coral Powder.  Less likely is a polished Coral Twig.  Even more remote is the possibilitiy of receiving a Coral Slice.  These processed items can be sold.  The Coral Powder is worth 6 Coins.  The Polished Coral Twig is worth 10 Coins and finally, the Coral Slice is worth 20 Coins.  Not much of a profit if one considers the value of the items one traded for bait!    One Cheddar Cheese makes only 5 Bait.  One Sugar makes 33 Bait.  One Sugar when sold from the barn is worth 138 Coins, a fairly hefty price.  One Cheddar Cheese is worth only  23 Coins but that still is more than the value of some of the  items that can be caught if one trades enough Cheddar Cheese to produce 50 or 200 Bait.

Fishing, as for most people in real life, basically must be considered a labour of love rather than a viable business option, especially when one looks at the number of items that must be caught using bait that costs 1 RC.

As previously stated, success in fishing very much depends on the player's choice of Fishing Rod.  For 12,000 Coins, you can upgrade your original Wooden Rod.  It makes an incredible difference and is worth the cost!  If you wish to be able to avoid any escapes, however, you will need the Panda Bamboo Rod.

The Wooden Fishing Rod is the default and is free.  It has a Low Fishing Accuracy.

The Carbon Fishing Rod costs 12,000 Coins and has a Medium Fishing Accuracy

The Panda Bamboo Rod coast 15 RC and has a high Fishing Accuracy.

When you receive Stars for a Catch, that appears to depend on the number of taps needed to catch that item.  I caught only one Message in a Bottle but received three stars (the maximum) because it took only 2 taps.

Here are some of the items one can catch with their values:

Note that only some of the items that you catch when fishing can be processed in the Seafood House.  Those Items that can be processed will appear in the Seafood House Menu.

I have no special knowledge of the plans of the developers of Family Farm Seaside, but I would be much surprised if these items do not appear as Recipe ingredients in the near future.  I therefore strongly would suggest that players store them rather than selling them.

Meanwhile, there is another 'Machine' in the form of the Smoke House that allows Players to make Smoked Seafood and Fish of various types.  I had thought the Smoke House would be classified as a Building but it is a Machine.

Smokehouse Items:

Smoked Yellow Croaker: 60 Coins
Smoked Hairtail: 77 Coins
Smoked Tilapia: 84 Coins
Smoked Flatfish: 106 Coins
Smoked Butterfish: 265 Coins

At the end of November, quite a large number of new Seafood Recipes were added to the Kitchen.  They use both the most common processed Items as well as the least common items one can obtain by processing a fishing catch in the Seafood House.  They are included on my Kitchen Page.  A few items, such as the Seahorse and the King Crab as of yet cannot be used in any Recipe or processing machine.  It will be interesting to see what happens...
