New Time-Restricted Nyepi Mission

A time-limited dual Quest has been released in Family Farm Seaside today.  I had seen announcements of it during the past couple of days when I was unable to load my farm.  Almost 300 days of consecutive log-ins without ever missing a day lost...  In any case, much to my delight, my Farm loaded today after I made some changes to my tablet and internet connection ability.  God willing, it will continue to load.  In any case, here is the information about the new Missions.

The first as usual is a Collections Mission with random collection of specific colours of Fans from specified Crops, Trees Animals and Machines.  These are as follows:

70 Green Balinese Fans from Chardonnay Crop
50 Blue Balinese Fans from Peacock Feathers
30 Pink Balinese Fans from Love Cakes (Cake Machine)
10 Yellow Balinese Fans from Lemon Trees

The two Prizes for completing the Collections Mission are a Jackfruit Tree and a Balinese Gateway

The second Quest sequence is a traditional one and is as follows:

Mission Strategies
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Although it is best to focus first on the Collections Mission as you will need the two Prizes in order to progress past Nyepi VI in the traditional Quest, there is no harm in working on them together.  If you look at all the requirements for these Quests, you will see that you need an incredible quantity of Rice.  Rice is fed to the Turkey to produce Turkey (meat) which is used in more than one of the Recipes you must prepare in order to complete the Nyepi Quest.  Rice is fed to the Peacock to produce the Peacock Feathers needed for the Blue Balinese Fans in the Collections Mission.  Grow Rice, Rice and more Rice and if you have cleanable Decorations, place them on your Farm in order to obtain more Power randomly from the Gift Bags.

Another Item that is needed in some quantity for the Nyepi Quest is Coconut.  It is one of the main ingredients in Balinese Recipes so it is not surprising that it features in this Quest sequence.  You will need Cane to make Sugar as well as for use in one of the Quest Recipes.

Coconut in this Quest is mainly required in the form of Coconut Milk.  This is a Recipe that can be made in advance.  Even with the new Cleaning Gift Bag option that delivers 1 Power to Farmers randomly, lack of sufficient Power to complete a stage in a time-restricted Quest can be a problem.  One therefore should make as many Ingredient Recipes as possible BEFORE one needs them.  Obviously you cannot make a required Dish in advance but you can make the Dishes that constitute the Ingredients for those Quest Dishes.

WARNING ABOUT QUEST PRODUCTS

In this Quest, you are well advised NOT to sell any of the Crops or Kitchen Dishes that you make.  They will be needed at some point during the Quest.  In some cases, you will find that the Dish you made in one step is not needed in the step that immediately follows but much later.  This probably is a matter of good planning on the part of the developers to allow Power to be restored to the Kitchen.

For example, 20 Betutu Chicken and 30 Satay must be made in Part IV of the Nyepi Quest.  In Part IV, the final step of the Quest, you will be required to produce 10 Balinese Rice and 20 Betutu Chicken Rice.  One of the ingredients in Balinese Rice is Satay.  One of the ingredients in Betutu Chicken Rice is Betutu Chicken.  The other ingredient in each case is another Dish.  The second Ingredient can be made in advance in order to stagger the use of Power.

For Balinese Rice, you will need the Satay and Jackfruit Curry.  Jackfruit Curry requires Jackfruit and Coconut Milk.  If you have your Jackfruit Tree, however, it may be best to wait until Part VIII to harvest the number of Jackfruits needed for 10 Balinese Rice as you will need to harvest 8 for this step in the Quest.  Coconut Milk, however, should be made in advance.   It requires a Coconut and 2 Sugar to produce.

For Betutu Chicken Rice, you will need Coconut Milk as well, as it is an Ingredient in Sticky Rice, which is the other Ingredient in the Recipe.  In other words, you will need a total of 30 Coconut Milk to satisfy the requirements of both Dishes made in the final step in the Quest.

BATCH PRODUCTION

There was a time when Batch Production was less than practical to some extent unless the Player were willing to spend RC on OP.  It was very difficult to earn sufficient OP to be able to consider the use of Batch Production except in special circumstances.  Now, however, with a number of recent options that include the OP Sheep (a reward for completing Daily Orders) and Cleaning Gift Bags (often containing 3 OP), a Player can use Batch Production regularly.  Even so, OP is not unlimited and I myself prefer to save my OP for use during time-restricted Quests such as this one.

My own strategy where Machine production is concerned is to have at least two of all Machines and to split the Quest requirement between Batch Production and manual production.  I set one Machine to Batch Production for about half the total amount of product required for the Quest.  The other half I produce manually.

What is nice about Batch Production is that one can organise it in advance of the Quest and simply refrain from collecting it until the Mission or Quest requires it.  This is similar to the new Machine House option in the original Family Farm.

TRADITIONS OF NYEPI

Nyepi is the Balinese New Year, the Day of Silence that falls on the day that follows the dark moon of the Spring Equinox and begins a new Year of the Saka Hindu era that began in 78 A.D.

The Balinese have three different calendars.  They follow the Gregorian Calendar for official business, but other than that, they have the Pawukon, from the word 'Wuku' meaning week and the Sasih, from the word that means month.  Wuku consists of thirty items beginning with Sinta, the first Wuku, and ending with Watugunung, the last Wuku.  The Pawukon is a 210 day ritual calendar brought from Java in the 14th century and consists of a complex cycle of numerological conjunctions providing the basic schedule for ritual activities on Bali.  Sashi is a parallel system that originated in India, a lunar calendar that begins with the Vernal Equinox and is equally important in Balinese Culture in terms of marking the days when respect is to be paid to the gods.

Nyepi is a day that, like most of the New Year Days in the various cultures of the world, is intended to keep Nature in balance.  It is based on a tale of King Kanista of India and the year when he was chosen to rule.  The King was known for his tolerance of other faiths, including Hinduism and Buddhism.  Aji Saka performed the Dharma Yatra, the missionary tour to promote and spread Hinduism in that era and introduced the Saka year to Indonesia.

The Nyepi Festival consists of a number of different ritual days:

Melasti, Mekiyis or Melis;  This occurs three days before Nyepi and is devoted to the cleansing of the pratima, arca or pralingga, a ritual Statue.  Symbols that are intended to concentrate the mind to bring closeness to God are used.  The ceremony is aimed at the cleansing of ALL of Nature and takes the Amerta, the source of Eternal Life, from the ocean or other water resources.  On this day, the effigies of all the Gods are taken from the village temples to the river in long and colourful ceremonies.  They then are bathed ritually by the Neptune of the Balinese God, the God Baruna, before being taken back to their homes in their shrines.

Tawur Kesanga:  This occurs on the day before Nyepi and consists of an exorcism ceremony.  All the villages of Bali hold a ceremony on this day at the major crossroads, considered to be the meeting place of Demons in most cultures of the world.  Ogoh-ogoh, fantastic monsters or evil spirits or Butha Kala made of bamboo are brought to the crossroads for carnival activities.  The Ogoh-ogoh monsters are symbols of the evil spirits that surround our environment.  The carnivals are held throughout Bali after the setting of the sun.

Bleganjur, a type of Balinese gamelan music, accompanies the processions which are illuminated by torches.  The frightening statues are taken from classical Balinese lore and include giants with fangs, bulging eyes and unkempt hair.     These processions usually are organised by the Seka Teruna, the youth organisation of Banjar.  Tawur Kesanga is performed by every level of society, within private homes as well as outside.  In the evening, the Hindus celebrating Ngerupuk begin to make noise and light burning torches to set fire to the Ogoh-ogoh in order to destroy the Bhuta Kala or evil spirits.

Nyepi:  Nyepi Day is the Day of Silence.  Every street is quiet.  Pecalangs, traditional Balinese security, control street security and maintain the peace.  On this 'Day of Silence', no cars are allowed upon the roads.  People are expected to stay at home and observe a period of meditation and quiet.  Television, radios and computer activity are not encouraged.  It is a day upon which all frantic activity should cease, a day upon which the slate of the old year is wiped clean, to prepare for a new Year.

Ngembak Geni:  The day after Nyepi is a day upon which Hindus forgive one another and perform the Dharma Canthi.  This includes the recitation or reading of ancient scripts of songs with their lyrics known as Sloka, Kekidung and Kekawin as well as others.

New Year rituais in every culture tend to include certain ritual acts.  A cleansing ritual is one.  Noise that frightens away demons is another.  Nyepi has these elements as well.
